"Thoughts For The New Year"
- Many of my patients (and people in general) tend to say something like “after the new year I’ll change”. I know many individuals who are going to do a lot of “partying” in the next week or so. I remind them that while “partying” may be enjoyable, think about the head start you could get for your “high performance mind” if you put the breaks on now. There are many examples of bad habits and behaviors that will change “after January 1”. Which apply to you? Drinking, social avoidance, over-dependence on technology, avoidance of challenging situations, enabling those who depend on you are common examples.
- For those of you who live on Long Island, I will be on Channel 12 News “Jobline” for the next three weekends. It was a good interview about performance anxiety at work and my new book “Work Makes Me Nervous”.
- Remember, you can get a free e-book “Conversation Anxiety”. After you purchase “Work Makes Me Nervous”, go to page 36 and identify the first three words of the second sentence. Send this to me at www.socialanxiety.com/free-ebook.html and the e-book will be sent to you at no charge.
Probably the most common statement I have heard from my 10, 000 patients of all ages since 1978 is “I have nothing to say” or “I don’t know what to say”. This is an example of Selective Mutism.
I wish you good health and high performance skills for the new year,
Jonathan
