The Andrew Kukes Foundation This important new foundation was established to honor the life and memory of Andrew Kukes, who took his life after an 8 year battle with Social Anxiety. Valedictorian of his high school class, he showed no significant signs of mental health issues until college. He found that he could not adjust to the social pressures of campus life at Princeton. After six months, he enrolled at Columbia where knowing a friend made his transition easier. As a result, in 2001 Andy graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Shortly after graduation Andy fell into a severe depression. He and his family diligently and desperately pursued every kind of help possible. It wasn’t until Andy met with Jonathan Berent, L.C.S.W., A.C.S.W., that he began to understand his problem. Unfortunately, he chose not to participate in the recommended treatment and sought help on his own. The outcome was tragic. Andy’s story compelled the Kukes family to establish the Andrew Kukes Foundation for Social Anxiety with a stated mission of training professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of social anxiety, providing a forum and guidance for sufferers and their families, and educating the general public. “It is our hope that this will never happen to another family” said Jeff Kukes.
